OK, nothing in this post about bees, but I thoroughly enjoyed seeing this little fawn yesterday, and was amused by its fixation on my chocolate lab. It must've lunged & bleated at the dog 10 times or more. It didn't even notice the yellow lab. I posted a video on youtube.

Subject: East Bloomfield, need a little help - by: liquidsquid

Hi all,

I have been a bit too busy with Cub Scouts and other responsibilities to be taking very good care of my bees, but I have run into a bit of a "bind" so to speak.

My top and bottom super frames are all glued together. Apparently my bees are big producers of propolis and have firmly glued the top frames onto the top super, which I am having a heck of a time releasing (I have been unable to release some), and then "combed" the top and bottom frames together. I split the supers, went to lift, and the bottom center 8 or so frames lifted up with the top ones.

That makes setting them to the side rather difficult to perform inspections. Especially alone. I Just slid everything back together rather than trying to separate everything, and let the bees get back to work.

I am looking for a mentor to give me a hand and some instruction so I can inspect my colony. I am not seeing a big surge of bees like I was hoping for, and I think I have a small hive beetle problem I would like to get some traps installed for. With everything glued together, it is making this rather difficult.

Thanks for any suggestions. I am sure some of you have dealt with this. Right now I am just happy I got by bees through the winter successfully.
Subject: A Way to Promote your Honey locally - by: Bob

Hi Everyone,

I'm Bob Gusciora, and I've thought of a way to promote your honey locally, if you wish. Since November, I've been volunteering two days a week at Gleaners Community Kitchen, which is part of St John's Episcopal Church on Main Street in Canandaigua, and which serves lunches at noon, five days a week, to local folks who are needy. Everyone is served, with no questions asked. On a typical day, 30 to 60 people are fed (the maximum attendance was 120 on one day). Throughout the week, about 40 volunteers total (some are excellent cooks!) contribute their time to prepare and to serve sumptuous meals from scratch, using basic food donations from many of the food purveyors in the area.

Today, however, one cook wanted some honey for a recipe. When we searched the pantry, there was none, and I was told that Gleaners had had some previously, but it had been thrown out because it was “...nasty....” I thought that this might be an opportunity for club beekeepers to donate a small amount of their local honey, contribute to the community, become known amongst a small number of first class cooks, and receive a potential tax credit for their donation.

I’ll be at the May 13th meeting, so if you want to bring a small jar of your honey (labeled with your name, address, and apiary name --- very important), I’ll give it to Gleaners and arrange for a receipt for your donation. Thanks.

Subject: Deadout questions - by: NorTracNY

I have a new deadout. The hive had plenty of bees in it as of 2 weeks ago. I will likely send off some bees to Beltsville. I know they did not starve. There is plenty of honey in the hive. There were few bees even on the frames. The bottom board had plenty of bees. Even though it was a screened bottom board, it was cluttered.

I have a few questions... Anyone have a guess what my have been the cause? What is the shine on the capped honey? What is in the cells of the one picture? I was feeding a sugar syrup on the top board. I know this is not ideal. Did I create too much humidity? Is the honey safe to eat? Is pesticides the only concern in honey being unsafe?

Thanks.
Subject: Two hives need removed- Honeoye Falls & Geneva - by: jimcoler

I know of two active hives where the homeowners want them out. There is one in Honeoye Falls and the other in Geneva.

Honeoye Falls - this one is in the rake of the soffit up at the peak of two stories. Last year it was pretty active and I convinced the homeowner to let it stay for the winter. He wants it out now.

Geneva - This one is up three stories and we have access to a lift to get up there. Their entrance is under the soffit of a sit on top gable. I know this is a very well established hive as they've had previous hives around here even on the outside of the house. The homeowner wants them out and is willing to help, but is allergic to bees! I was considering a trap out with it sitting on the roof next to the entrance but I'm not sure that will work with what I've been reading.

Please give me a call if you're willing to help or take these on!
I just dont have the time this weekend to get to these.

Lisa called me today and said she needs bees removed. Her husband said they came in late last year and they are here again this year. Sound like an established hive so I dont think a trap out would work... . The are located up in the sofit of their house.

Her Phone number is 315-597-1643

They want the bees taken alive. I told the husband that it may require several hours of work depending on how far the bees have made comb. I also told him that the comb and or honey would need to be removed to discourge further infestations or rodents.

Have fun.
